Cause To Celebrate: Savour Our Neighbourhood 2016
Starting a life in a new country, even one with the freedoms we enjoy in Canada can be a difficult transition. For many refugees entering Canada, their arrival in a safe country is just the beginning of new challenges of integration, language barriers, and job uncertainty.
Grassroots efforts to help local families adjust in Vancouver have been impressive. Neighbours have formed groups to sponsor individuals and families, while more established organizations have seen an increase in the number of volunteers wanting to lend their support.
Places like the Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society provide education and support via drop in as well as outreach for local and refugee families with small children. Today -Thursday, March 10th – marks the Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society’s 3rd annual fundraising event: Savour Our Neighbourhood 2016. Heritage Hall will host a feast with local food, BC wine, craft beer and music.
Local restaurant and microbrewery partners include Earnest Ice Cream, Terra Breads, eight ½, Cartem’s Donuterie, Nuba, Bomber Brewing and The Cascade Room.
The celebration benefits the many programs at the Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society. Their Circles of Care and Connections Program offers outreach, home visits and parent education for new refugees as well as many other community resources. We salute their efforts in helping our new neighbours.
